Locust Fork of the Black Warrior
About
From Powell Falls to Cleveland, the Locust Fork cuts 30 miles of Class II–IV whitewater through Blount County's Appalachian foothills. The middle section between Swann Bridge and Nectar runs through a Class III–IV gorge that defines Alabama whitewater, while the upper stretch from Powell Falls to Swann Bridge holds to Class II–III gradient. Below Nectar, the river mellows to Class II as it approaches Cleveland. At 1,400 CFS average with an optimal range of 500–3,000, the Locust Fork rewards boaters who can read the gauge — USGS 02455300 tells the story of whether those Class IV drops are runnable or pushy beyond reason. Alabama designated it a Scenic River in 2010, and the Black Warrior Clean Water Partnership monitors watershed health. Swann Bridge Canoe Launch provides river access, though most paddlers running the gorge section are in kayaks or rafts built for technical water.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
