From Gadeke Lake to its confluence with the Malamute Fork, the Alatna runs 110 miles through Gates of the Arctic National Park as a designated Wild & Scenic River under National Park Service management. The upper section from Gadeke Lake to Circle Lake flows through the heart of the Brooks Range, while the lower stretch from Circle Lake to the Malamute Fork continues the wilderness corridor. No USGS gauge monitors the Alatna, reflecting its roadless character in one of Alaska's most remote watersheds.
