About

From Surprise Lake within the Aniakchak Caldera, the Aniakchak River cuts through one of Alaska's most remote volcanic landscapes on its 30-mile run to Aniakchak Bay. Designated Wild & Scenic and managed by the National Park Service, this river flows entirely through the Aniakchak National Monument and Preserve on the Alaska Peninsula. The caldera itself formed roughly 3,500 years ago, and Surprise Lake sits within this six-mile-wide crater at 1,100 feet elevation. The river drops through "The Gates," a 1,500-foot-deep notch in the caldera wall, then continues across the coastal plain to reach the Pacific. With no roads, no gauges, and no regular aircraft service to the area, the Aniakchak remains one of Alaska's least visited waterways despite its federal protection.
