Deep Creek
About
The Dena'ina Athabascan people fished Deep Creek for generations before the state established its tractor launch in the 1960s, creating one of Alaska's most accessible salmon and steelhead fisheries. This 25-mile system flows from the Caribou Hills through the Kenai Peninsula Borough to Cook Inlet, averaging 120 CFS in mostly Class I water. The upper 10 miles hold wild steelhead and resident Dolly Varden, while the middle stretch through the Ninilchik area sees king salmon runs in late May and silver salmon in August. Alaska Department of Fish and Game designates Deep Creek as catch-and-release water for steelhead. At the mouth, the famous tractor launch at Deep Creek State Recreation Area puts boats directly into Cook Inlet for halibut and king salmon fishing. Ninilchik Charters operates from this launch. Flows range from 50 to 500 CFS depending on snowmelt and rainfall, with no USGS gauge to monitor conditions.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
