Goodnews River
About
From Goodnews Lake through the Bethel Census Area, the Goodnews River flows 60 miles of Class I-II water averaging 1,500 CFS with no gauge data — typical for western Alaska's roadless watersheds. The upper reaches above the Middle Fork confluence hold trophy arctic char and rainbow trout, while the lower river near Goodnews Bay runs thick with king and silver salmon during their respective seasons. This is Yup'ik homeland, protected since 1980 within Togiak National Wildlife Refuge. At optimal flows between 500-3,000 CFS, the middle section offers multi-day float opportunities through tundra country, though most anglers work with Goodnews River Lodge for logistics. Without road access, everything moves by floatplane, and weather windows dictate when you fish and when you wait.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
