Kanektok River
About
From Kagati Lake through 85 miles of Togiak National Wildlife Refuge, the Kanektok runs Class I-II water averaging 1,400 CFS through some of Alaska's most productive rainbow trout habitat. The upper 20 miles from the lake to the North Fork hold resident rainbows and char in clear water ideal for sight fishing. Below the North Fork confluence, the middle 40 miles become a five-species salmon highway — kings, reds, silvers, chums, and pinks all spawn in this system, feeding trophy rainbows that can exceed 30 inches. The lower 25 miles from Quinhagak village to the Bering Sea focus on silver salmon and subsistence fishing for the Yup'ik community. Alaska Department of Fish and Game designates this Trophy Rainbow Water with special regulations. The entire drainage sits within Togiak Wilderness, established in 1980, meaning no roads, no development, and fly-in access only. Alaska West operates guided trips on the system, typically targeting the middle river during peak salmon runs when rainbows are most aggressive.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
