Klutina River
About
From Klutina Lake through the Copper River Census Area, the Klutina runs 63 miles of Class II-IV water averaging 1,800 CFS with an optimal range of 1,000-5,000. The Ahtna Athabascan people established Copper Center at the river's mouth, and today Ahtna Corporation holds much of the surrounding land. Alaska Department of Fish and Game designates the lower 18 miles from Amerada Road to Copper Center as a sockeye priority fishery. Above that, the middle section covers 25 miles of Class II-III floating from the lake outlet to Amerada Road. The upper 20 miles provide lake access for trout and char fishing. Klutina River Lodge operates guided trips on the system. Recent access disputes culminated in the 2020 Klutina River Access Lawsuit, reflecting ongoing tensions over land use along this glacial drainage. USGS gauge 15206000 tracks flows that can swing dramatically with seasonal melt patterns.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
