Verde River
About
Arizona's last free-flowing river cuts 170 miles through Yavapai County, from high desert headwaters to the Sonoran basin above Horseshoe Reservoir. The Verde averages 680 CFS and runs best between 300–2000 CFS, tracked at USGS gauge 09504000. The Yavapai and Tonto Apache called it "The Life River of the Desert" — an apt name for the only major Arizona waterway without dams controlling its flow. Class I–II water dominates the upper Verde from Paulden to Clarkdale, while the Clarkdale to Bridgeport section offers the best whitewater at Class II–III. Below Bridgeport, the lower desert corridor returns to Class I–II through cottonwood bosques protected within the Verde River Greenway State Natural Area. Verde Adventures and Sedona Adventure Tours run commercial trips through the system's most reliable stretches.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
