Klamath River
About
Dam removal completed in 2024 has returned the Klamath River to free flow for the first time in over a century — the largest such project in U.S. history. The river now runs 257 miles unimpeded from Oregon to the Pacific, averaging 4,200 CFS with optimal flows between 1,000 and 6,000 CFS depending on the section. The former Iron Gate Dam reach upstream to Happy Camp offers Class I-III water through what was once backed-up reservoir. Downstream, the Ishi Pishi Falls to Weitchpec section drops through Class III-IV rapids in Yurok territory, while the lower Klamath eases to Class I-II as it approaches the estuary. Partial Wild & Scenic designation protects key corridors along the 257-mile length through Siskiyou and Humboldt counties. Klamath River Outfitters runs guided trips on various sections. USGS gauge 11530500 tracks flows, though the river's character continues to evolve as sediment patterns and fish runs adjust to the newly opened system.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
