Sacramento River
About
From Shasta Dam's cold tailwater releases, the Sacramento River flows 400 miles through California's Central Valley, averaging 8,500 CFS with optimal flows between 5,000–15,000 CFS for most boating. The upper section above Shasta Lake runs Class II–III through mountain terrain before entering the reservoir. Below the dam, the Redding to Red Bluff stretch covers 60 miles of prime salmon water, benefiting from consistent cold releases that maintain ideal temperatures for chinook and steelhead runs. The Red Bluff to Colusa section extends another 80 miles through riparian corridor protected within the Sacramento River National Wildlife Refuge. Wild & Scenic designation covers the upper mountain section, while the 2024 Sacramento River Salmon Recovery Initiative targets habitat restoration throughout the watershed. USGS gauge 11377100 tracks flows through Shasta and Tehama counties, where Class I–II water predominates once the river leaves the foothills.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
