South Platte River
About
Gold Medal waters below Cheesman Reservoir create three miles of trophy trout fishing through the granite walls of Cheesman Canyon, where the South Platte emerges cold and nutrient-rich from the dam release. The river runs 439 miles total through Park and Jefferson counties, but the tailwater sections below the reservoirs hold the premium fishing and paddling. At Deckers, Class II-III whitewater combines with excellent trout habitat as flows average 510 CFS. Waterton Canyon offers Class II runs accessible from Denver, flowing below Strontia Springs Dam through the Waterton Canyon State Wildlife Area. The Ute and Arapaho peoples used these headwaters long before Colorado designated the Gold Medal sections in 1996. Optimal flows run 300-1500 CFS on gauge 06701900, with the tailwater releases providing consistent conditions year-round. Trouts Fly Fishing guides both the technical canyon water and the more accessible runs closer to the Front Range.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
