Bantam River
About
From Bantam Lake through the White Memorial Conservation Center, the Bantam River flows 15 miles of Class I water through Litchfield County at an average 120 CFS. The upper section from the lake to White Memorial passes through the conservation center's 4,000-acre preserve, while the lower stretch continues through marsh and meadow habitat to its confluence with the Shepaug River. Optimal flows run 50–200 CFS, though without a USGS gauge paddlers must judge conditions by eye. The Bantam River Wildlife Management Area protects additional corridor along the lower reaches. White Memorial Conservation Center serves as the primary outfitter for this quiet water system, which attracts paddlers seeking protected habitat rather than whitewater challenge.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
