Shepaug River
About
Through Litchfield County's Steep Rock Preserve, the Shepaug River runs 26 miles of Class I-II water that serves as winter roost for bald eagles. The designated Shepaug Eagle Observation Area protects critical habitat along the upper reaches from Washington to Roxbury, where the river holds its steepest gradient and most technical water. Below Roxbury toward Southbury, the gradient mellows to Class I through the lower valley. At 180 CFS average with an optimal range of 100-500, the Shepaug responds well to seasonal rains but rarely pushes dangerously high. Clarke Outdoors provides guided trips and equipment rental for paddlers targeting the eagle viewing season. USGS gauge 01202501 tracks flows for trip planning, though the Shepaug's modest size means it can drop quickly during dry spells.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
