Brandywine Creek
About
From Chadds Ford down through New Castle County to Wilmington, Brandywine Creek drops 30 miles of piedmont gradient that shifts from Class I-III rapids to tidal flats approaching the Christina River. At 480 CFS average, optimal flows run 200–800 CFS on gauge 01481500. The upper section from Chadds Ford carries the technical water — stone drops and ledges that demand attention above 500 CFS — while the lower approach to Wilmington mellows to Class I as tidal influence takes over. Brandywine Creek State Park and First State National Historical Park protect sections of the corridor. Wilderness Canoe Trips runs guided trips on the system. The creek passes through both Pennsylvania and Delaware, though the majority of the paddling miles lie in Delaware's New Castle County.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
