Christina River
About
From Newark through New Castle County, the Christina River runs 35 miles of Class I water averaging 420 CFS through Delaware's piedmont before reaching the tidal Wilmington Riverfront. The upper section flows as a typical piedmont creek with optimal flows between 200-1000 CFS, monitored at USGS gauge 01478000. Below Wilmington, the river turns tidal and becomes part of the urban heritage paddle that connects First State Heritage Park with the Hagley Museum along the developed waterfront. Wilderness Canoe Trips operates outfitter services on the system. The tidal section offers a different character from the freshwater creek above, flowing through the historic industrial corridor that shaped early Delaware.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
