Nanticoke River
About
From freshwater riffles at Seaford through 64 miles of tidal marshes and cypress swamps, the Nanticoke River transitions from Sussex County creek to Chesapeake Bay tributary. At 280 CFS average flow (optimal 100–500), the upper 15 miles from Seaford to Woodland mark the freshwater-to-tidal transition zone. Below Woodland, 20 miles of tidal marshes and cypress swamps characterize the middle river through Sharptown, while the lower 25 miles widen into a major tidal river before joining the Chesapeake. The Nanticoke River Wildlife Area protects key stretches of this corridor. Nanticoke River Kayak provides outfitting services for paddlers exploring the system. USGS gauge 01487000 monitors conditions on this tributary that drains portions of the Delmarva Peninsula.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
