Red Clay Creek
About
Red Clay Creek winds 25 miles through New Castle County's piedmont, averaging 100 CFS over riffles and pools that respond quickly to recent rainfall. The upper stretch from Yorklyn to Ashland covers 8 miles of wooded paddling, while the lower 10 miles from Ashland to Stanton open into wider water through suburban parkland. Optimal flows run 50–200 CFS on gauge 01480000 — below 50 the riffles scrape, above 200 the creek pushes hard through the tighter bends. The Delaware Nature Society helped establish the Red Clay Creek Greenway to protect riparian corridors, and First State Paddle runs guided trips when water levels cooperate. This is classic Mid-Atlantic piedmont paddling: nothing technical, but the creek drops fast enough to stay interesting between the deeper pools.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
