St. Jones River
About
From Lebanon through Dover to Delaware Bay, the St. Jones River transitions from freshwater stream to tidal estuary across 25 miles in Kent County. At 120 CFS average flow (optimal 50–200), this Class I waterway shifts character completely at Dover, where the freshwater run meets tide influence and salt marsh takes over. The upper section from Lebanon to Dover holds the traditional river character, while below Dover the St. Jones opens into classic Mid-Atlantic estuary habitat. NOAA manages the St. Jones Reserve along portions of the corridor, with additional protection through the Dover Greenway and Ted Harvey Conservation Area. First State Paddle provides outfitter services for paddlers looking to explore either the freshwater or tidal sections. USGS gauge 01483700 tracks conditions, though tidal influence below Dover means timing matters as much as flow levels.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
