Hillsborough River
About
Crystal Springs feeds the Hillsborough River through 54 miles of Pasco and Hillsborough counties, creating Florida's rare example of Class II whitewater within a state park section. At 380 CFS average flow, the river runs from spring-fed headwaters through an urban wilderness corridor that somehow maintains paddling character despite Tampa's sprawl. The 15-mile stretch from Crystal Springs to Hillsborough River State Park holds the coldest, clearest water. Within the state park itself, five miles of actual rapids drop over limestone ledges — unusual enough in Florida to draw paddlers specifically for the whitewater. Below that, the Wilderness Park to Rowlett Park section covers another 15 miles through protected corridor that buffers the river from surrounding development. Optimal flows run 100–800 CFS on USGS gauge 02304500, with Canoe Escape providing shuttle service for multi-day trips.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
