Coosawattee River
About
Above Carters Lake, 15 miles of the Coosawattee cut Class II–III mountain whitewater through the Chattahoochee National Forest in Gilmer and Murray counties. The Army Corps dam creates a dramatic split in character — below the structure, 10 miles of cold tailwater support trout fishing in Class I current, then the river transitions through 25 miles of Class I–II piedmont water toward Calhoun. At 580 CFS average with an optimal range of 200–1500, the Coosawattee offers reliable flows across most of its 50-mile length. The upper mountain section provides the technical paddling, while the tailwater stretch below Carters Dam runs consistently cold from bottom releases. Carters Lake Marina operates as an outfitter for the system. USGS gauge 02383500 tracks the flows that determine whether the upper runs are manageable or pushy.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
