Oconee River
About
Through Athens and the University of Georgia corridor, the Oconee River runs 15 miles of Class I-II water to Barnett Shoals before settling into a 60-mile Piedmont forest float toward Milledgeville. At 1,600 CFS average with an optimal range of 500-3,000 CFS, the Oconee carries enough volume year-round for consistent paddling through Clarke and Oconee counties. The upper Athens section offers the most reliable whitewater features, while the downstream miles through hardwood bottomland provide a different character entirely. Big Dogs on the River operates on this system, and the river holds Georgia Scenic River candidate status. The Oconee River Greenway protects sections of the corridor near Athens. USGS gauge 02218300 tracks flows on this 220-mile system that drains a significant portion of north-central Georgia's Piedmont.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
