About

From the Wai'ale'ale headwaters through 16 miles of Kauai's north shore, the Hanalei River flows at 220 CFS average through what remains the island's most intact traditional taro landscape. Named "Crescent Bay" in Hawaiian, the Hanalei system drains some of the wettest terrain on earth before spreading into the flatwater paddling corridor that draws visitors to the famous one-lane bridge. The lower section from Hanalei Bridge to Hanalei Bay offers the accessible paddling — entirely flat water through taro fields that have been cultivated for over a millennium. Above that, the Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge protects endangered Hawaiian waterbird habitat where native species like Hawaiian stilt and Hawaiian coot nest among the lo'i. The upper reaches through dense rainforest remain off-limits to public access. Designated an American Heritage River in 1998, the Hanalei operates within a flow range of 40–500 CFS tracked by USGS gauge 16103000. Kayak Hanalei provides outfitted trips for those wanting guided access to the refuge waters.
