Wailua River
About
Hawaii's only navigable river flows 20 miles through Kauai County at an average of 80 CFS, with optimal paddling between 20 and 200 CFS on USGS gauge 16060000. The Wailua launches from Lydgate Beach Park at the river mouth, offering four miles of flat water upstream to Fern Grotto. The North Fork provides kayak access to the Secret Falls trail, while the South Fork runs quieter through dense jungle corridor. Wailua River State Park protects the lower reaches, and the Wailua Complex of Heiau holds National Historic Landmark status for its ancient Hawaiian temple sites. Commercial outfitters including Smith's Fern Grotto Tour and Wailua Kayak Adventures operate regular trips on the main stem.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
