Priest River
About
From Priest Lake through 45 miles of Idaho Panhandle National Forests, the Priest River maintains Class I character at substantial volume — 1500 CFS average with an optimal range of 500–3000. The upper section from Priest Lake outlet to Dickensheet runs through dense forest corridors, while the middle stretch from Dickensheet to Priest River town opens slightly before the lower river continues to Pend Oreille. Kalispel people held this territory before contact, and the surrounding Selkirk Mountains still support the last remaining Selkirk caribou herd as of 2019. At these flows, the Priest offers straightforward paddling through Bonner County's backcountry, with Idaho Canoe Adventures operating guided trips. USGS gauge 12395000 tracks the reliable spring snowmelt that keeps this system flowing strong through summer.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
