Salmon River
About
Across 363 miles of continuous Class IV-V water, the Salmon delivers technical whitewater through National Wild & Scenic corridors managed by the U.S. Forest Service. At 2,838 CFS average (optimal 1,400–4,250), flows determine the character of the drops but never reduce them below expert level. The river divides into six major sections: North Fork to Corn Creek, Corn Creek to Long Tom, Vinegar to Lucile, Lucile to Hammer, Lower Gorge, and Upper Salmon. Each section demands precise boat handling and swift water rescue skills. USGS gauge 13310199 tracks the flows that determine trip timing and safety margins. Wild & Scenic designation protects the undeveloped character that makes this one of the premier expedition rivers in the lower 48.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
