Des Plaines River
About
Through Cook and Will counties, the Des Plaines runs 95 miles of mostly flatwater with scattered riffles, averaging 620 CFS with an optimal range of 300–1200. The river threads through multiple forest preserve systems — Lake County preserves protect the Libertyville to Wheeling stretch (15 miles), Cook County preserves cover the Dam No. 4 to Riverside section (20 miles), and Will County manages the Isle a la Cache to Channahon corridor (15 miles) alongside the historic Illinois & Michigan Canal. The Des Plaines River Trail follows much of the waterway, connecting the preserve lands. USGS gauge 05532500 tracks the flows that determine whether the riffles provide any interest or flatten into still water. This is fundamentally an urban river, its character shaped more by flood control and recreation management than by natural hydrology.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
