Rock River
About
Through Winnebago, Ogle, and Whiteside counties, the Rock River runs 299 miles of big water averaging 3,800 CFS with optimal flows from 500 to 4,000 CFS. The Rock River Trail Water Trail designation in 2012 formalized access along three distinct fishing sections. Upper reaches from the Wisconsin line to Rockford hold smallmouth bass in Class I water. The middle section from Rockford to Dixon shifts to Class I-II with walleye spawning runs below the dams. Lower water from Sterling to the Mississippi confluence opens up for catfish in wider, Class I current. Castle Rock Paddling provides guided trips and rentals for paddlers working the system. At nearly 300 miles, this is Illinois water-trail paddling at its largest scale — big flows, long stretches, and multiple species zones from smallmouth to catfish depending on which section you choose to fish.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
