Sangamon River
About
From Decatur through Springfield to the Illinois River, the Sangamon carries 1100 CFS average through 240 miles of prairie country in Macon and Sangamon counties. The Lincoln Heritage Water Trail follows the river's connection to Abraham Lincoln, who navigated these waters as a young man. Optimal flows run 500–2000 CFS on USGS gauge 05576000, with the river offering mostly riffles rather than true rapids. The Decatur to Riverton section covers 30 miles through the designated heritage corridor, while the Riverton to Springfield stretch runs 15 miles past the state capital. Downstream, the Petersburg to Beardstown section spans 40 miles before the Sangamon joins the Illinois River. Sangchris Lake State Park sits along the corridor, providing access to this major prairie waterway.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
