Vermilion River
About
From Oglesby to LaSalle, 30 miles of canyon water cut through LaSalle County at flows averaging 680 CFS. The Vermilion earned Wild & Scenic designation in 1981 for its carved limestone corridors and Class I-III gradient — optimal flows run 300-1200 CFS on gauge 05555300. Matthiessen State Park protects side canyons accessible only on foot, while the main stem offers the primary whitewater run. Heritage Harbor Sports provides shuttle service for paddlers tackling the canyon section, where limestone walls frame rapids that can push Class III at higher flows. The river cuts deeper into bedrock as it approaches its confluence with the Illinois River near LaSalle, creating the sculpted stone features that distinguish this corridor from the surrounding prairie landscape.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
