Sugar Creek
About
Through Montgomery and Parke counties, Sugar Creek cuts a 90-mile course that includes Indiana's signature whitewater run from Shades State Park to Turkey Run State Park. This 15-mile stretch drops through sandstone gorges with Class I–II rapids at flows between 300–1500 CFS, averaging 920 CFS on USGS gauge 03361630. Below Turkey Run, the next 20 miles to Montezuma widen considerably and pass several covered bridges. Sugar Creek earned Indiana Natural & Scenic River designation for its corridor through both state parks, where the sandstone bluffs and steep-walled canyons create some of the most dramatic scenery in the state. Sugar Creek Canoe Rental operates along the system for paddlers who need gear or shuttles. The creek runs best in spring and after heavy rains when flows push toward the upper end of the optimal range.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
