White River
About
From Muncie through Indianapolis and south to the Wabash confluence, the White River carries 2400 CFS average through 362 miles of Class I water across Marion, Hamilton, and Morgan counties. The Indiana DNR stocks muskellunge in select stretches, while the urban sections through Indianapolis offer smallmouth bass fishing within metro park boundaries. At optimal flows between 400–3000 CFS, the river provides consistent paddling water year-round. The West Fork above Indianapolis runs smaller through Muncie, while the lower river below Martinsville opens into bigger water approaching the Wabash. White River Canoe Company operates along the system. Indianapolis White River State Park provides developed access in the metro corridor, and the 2019 White River Vision Plan guides current management. USGS gauge 03353000 tracks conditions for the main stem.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
