About

From Austin, Minnesota through 300 miles of prairie to the Mississippi, the Cedar River carries an average 3,200 CFS through Black Hawk County and beyond as part of the Iowa Water Trail system. The Meskwaki and Sauk called it the River of the Red Cedars before European settlement altered the watershed. Class I water throughout, with optimal flows between 500–4,000 CFS monitored at USGS gauge 05464500. The Charles City to Waterloo section spans 80 miles of riffles and developed parks, while the Waterloo to Cedar Rapids stretch opens into wide prairie country. Below Cedar Rapids, another 80 miles lead through the lower valley to Columbus Junction. The Great Flood of 2008 devastated communities along the Cedar, reshaping how the river corridor is managed. Cedar Valley Paddlesports provides outfitting services for paddlers tackling the various sections. The Cedar River Greenbelt designation protects riparian corridors through the urban areas.
