About

Through Backbone State Park, the Maquoketa cuts a dramatic five-mile gorge with Class II-III drops that stand out sharply against Iowa's typically gentle topography. This 150-mile river runs through Jones and Jackson counties at an average 1,200 CFS, with optimal paddling between 400-2,500 CFS on gauge 05418500. The gorge section offers the most technical water, while the 40-mile stretch from Manchester to Monticello opens into Class I-II riffles and pools. Below Monticello, the final 50 miles to the town of Maquoketa spread into wide prairie river character. Iowa's Water Trail designation provides access and camping infrastructure along the route. Backbone State Park and Maquoketa River Paddle Sports serve as primary outfitters for the system.
