Wapsipinicon River
About
Through Jones and Buchanan counties, the Wapsipinicon runs 225 miles of Class I-II water at an average 980 CFS, with optimal flows between 200 and 1,500 CFS on USGS gauge 05421000. The upper stretch from Independence to Quasqueton covers 40 miles through prairie riffles, while the middle section from Quasqueton to Anamosa drops 50 miles through bluff country. The lower 60 miles from Anamosa to Dixon open into wide prairie valley. The river earned Iowa Water Trail designation in 2015, with Wapsipinicon State Park anchoring access along the corridor. Wapsipinicon Paddle Rentals serves the system for those without boats.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
