About

Through Allamakee County's Yellow River State Forest, 40 miles of coldwater trout stream wind through a narrow forest corridor that Iowa manages specifically for brook and brown trout. The main stem covers 20 miles of Class I-II water averaging 280 CFS, with optimal flows between 100-600 CFS on USGS gauge 05389000. Paint Creek adds another 10 miles of backcountry tributary fishing through more remote forest sections. As a designated Iowa Coldwater Trout Stream, the Yellow River system maintains the temperatures and dissolved oxygen levels that support wild trout reproduction. The state forest office coordinates access and can provide current conditions. At higher flows within the optimal range, occasional Class II features develop, but most of the system runs as gentle Class I water suitable for canoes and drift boats.
