Fall River
About
Below Fall River Dam, 20 miles of reliable tailwater flow at 380 CFS average through Greenwood County's tallgrass prairie — some of the most consistent Class I-II paddling in Kansas. The Fall River runs 65 miles total from dam release to its confluence with the Verdigris, with optimal flows between 200-1200 CFS on USGS gauge 07168500. The Osage people hunted these tallgrass prairies for generations before European settlement. Downstream from the dam section, the Climax to Severy stretch covers 25 miles of prairie riffles and pools, while the final 20 miles to the Verdigris confluence open into wider valley water. Fall River State Park manages access and outfitting on the upper reaches. The river gained attention during what locals call the 2023 Flint Hills Paddling Renaissance, and it's currently being considered for Kansas Scenic Streams designation.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
