Marais des Cygnes River
About
From Ottawa through 150 miles of eastern Kansas prairie and bottomland forest, the Marais des Cygnes carries an average 1,100 CFS through Miami and Linn counties. The Osage called these waters "Marsh of the Swans" — a name that stuck through French translation. The river runs entirely Class I with an optimal range from 200 to 2,000 CFS, making it navigable across a wide spectrum of conditions. The middle stretch from Osawatomie to Trading Post passes through the National Wildlife Refuge corridor, offering the best wildlife viewing as the river winds through protected bottomlands. Below Trading Post, the final 30 miles to the Missouri line show a wider channel cutting through mature forest. The 1858 Marais des Cygnes Massacre occurred along these banks during the Bleeding Kansas period, now commemorated at a memorial site. The Marais des Cygnes Paddling Club coordinates trips and maintains access information for those running the full system or shorter sections.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
