Cumberland River
About
Cumberland River tailwater flows average 3,444 CFS through 32 miles of Class III-IV whitewater, with optimal conditions between 1,700 and 5,200 CFS on gauge 03404500. The river splits into two main sections: the Cumberland River Tailwater and the stretch Below the Falls. Designated as a State Water Trail, this tailwater system delivers consistent technical rapids that hold their character across a wide flow range. The gradient and pool-drop nature of the Class III-IV water makes it accessible to intermediate boaters at lower flows while providing serious challenge when the release pushes toward 5,000 CFS.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
