Cumberland River — Wolf Creek Tailwater
About
Wolf Creek Dam releases create 75 miles of trophy trout water below Lake Cumberland, transforming the Cumberland River into Kentucky's premier tailwater fishery. The dam, completed in 1952, generates cold-water releases that average 2,400 CFS (optimal 500–4,000) and support the state's designated trophy trout fishery through Russell, Wayne, and Cumberland counties. The upper five miles from Wolf Creek Dam to Hatchery Creek hold the concentrated trophy reach, while the 30-mile stretch from Hatchery Creek to Helm's Landing offers classic drift boat water. The Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery supplements wild reproduction with regular stockings. Below that, 40 miles of mixed water gradually warm as the river recovers its natural character. Cumberland River Outfitters provides guided access to these waters, which fish well across a wide range of Corps releases. USGS gauge 03401000 tracks the generation schedule that drives both the fishing and floating conditions on this USACE-managed tailwater.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
