Green River
About
Through Mammoth Cave National Park, 25 miles of the Green River run spring-fed and crystal clear over limestone bedrock, part of the world's longest known cave system with over 420 miles of surveyed passage. The Green flows 384 miles total through Hart, Edmonson, and Butler counties at an average 1,850 CFS, with optimal paddling between 300–1,200 CFS on gauge 03308500. Above the park at Munfordville, Class I–II water provides the approach; inside the park boundaries, the river settles into long pools between gentle riffles where cave springs maintain clarity and cool temperatures year-round. Below Brownsville, the valley widens and the current flattens to Class I.
Archaic and Woodland peoples used the cave system for millennia before European settlement brought saltpeter mining during the War of 1812. The park was established in 1941, and the cave system earned UNESCO World Heritage Site and International Biosphere Reserve designations for its karst hydrology and biodiversity. Green River Canoe Rental and Mammoth Cave Adventures provide access and shuttles for the park section, where the underground and surface waters merge in one of North America's most distinctive paddle environments.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
