Kentucky River
About
The Kentucky Wild River designation protects the Palisades section where 100 miles of limestone gorge cut deep between Camp Nelson and Frankfort. At 4,200 CFS average flow through 259 total miles, the Kentucky River runs big water across Madison and Jessamine counties, with optimal paddling conditions from 500 to 5,000 CFS on gauge 03284000. The Palisades represent the river's signature stretch — sheer limestone walls rising from the water through a corridor that remains undeveloped. Above the gorge, Class I water flows through Appalachian foothills; below Frankfort to Carrollton, the lower river continues at Class I to its confluence with the Ohio. Camp Nelson earned National Monument status in 2018 for its Civil War heritage as a Union supply depot and recruitment center for Black soldiers. Shaker Village operates riverboat tours through portions of the Palisades, though private paddlers can run the entire section with proper shuttle arrangements.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
