Bogue Chitto River
About
From the intimate headwaters at Tylertown through Washington Parish to the National Wildlife Refuge, the Bogue Chitto runs 100 miles of Class I-II water at an average 1,200 CFS. The middle section from Warnerton to Franklinton offers the best combination of sandbars and paddling, while the lower reach from Franklinton downstream widens and slows as it enters the refuge established in 1980. Optimal flows run 300-2,000 CFS on gauge 07375085, giving paddlers a wide window for planning trips. The upper section above Warnerton stays tighter and more intimate through the headwater country, while below Franklinton the river broadens into the protected corridor managed by the Fish and Wildlife Service. Commercial outfitters like Bogue Chitto Tubing Center serve the more popular middle stretches where sandbars provide natural camping and rest stops.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
