Comite River
About
Through East Baton Rouge Parish, the Comite River runs 60 miles from Clinton to its confluence with the Amite, averaging 480 CFS with an optimal range of 100–800. The upper 25 miles from Clinton to Zachary wind through rural piney woods, while the lower 35 miles pass through increasingly suburban corridors. Pre-contact, this was Houma territory, and they called it Comite Creek. The 2019 Comite River Diversion Canal Project altered the watershed's flood management system. At Class I throughout, the river offers straightforward paddling with gauge 07378000 providing flow readings. Comite River Kayak Rentals operates along the corridor for those needing boats or shuttle service.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
