Allagash Wilderness Waterway
About
Ninety-two miles of protected waterway stretch through Aroostook and Piscataquis counties, linking a chain of lakes and rivers from Telos Lake to Allagash Village. The Allagash Wilderness Waterway combines flatwater lake paddling with Class I-II river sections, averaging 620 CFS through the system with optimal flows between 300-1200 CFS. The route divides into three distinct segments: Telos Lake to Chamberlain Lake covers 15 miles of lake paddling and portages, Churchill Dam to Umsaskis Lake spans 30 miles mixing river and lake sections, and Long Lake to Allagash Village runs 47 miles of river paddling with the most consistent Class I-II rapids. Designated both as Maine's Allagash Wilderness Waterway and a National Wild & Scenic River, the corridor maintains backcountry character with established campsites and ranger stations. Allagash Canoe Trips and Pelletier Loggers Family Restaurant & Campground serve paddlers planning multi-day expeditions through this northern Maine wilderness.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
