About

Class III-IV drops through 16 miles of Maine granite make the Dead River a premier big-water run through Somerset and Franklin counties. At 2,400 CFS average with an optimal range of 2,000–6,000, this is serious whitewater that commercial outfitters like Crab Apple Whitewater and Northern Outdoors guide through multi-day trips. The upper eight miles from Grand Falls to Spencer Stream hold the meat — Class III-IV gorge runs that demand precise boat control at volume. Below Spencer Stream, the final eight miles to The Forks open into Class III big-water features with long wave trains and powerful hydraulics. USGS gauge 01045000 tracks the flows that make or break a Dead River trip — below 2,000 CFS the rocks show, above 6,000 the holes get genuinely retentive. The Northern Forest Corridor designation keeps much of the watershed undeveloped, maintaining the remote character that makes this one of New England's classic expedition runs.
