Rapid River
About
From Middle Dam to Umbagog Lake, the Rapid River drops three miles of Class II-III whitewater through Oxford County at an average 620 CFS. The upper mile and a half to Cedar Stump holds the main rapids, while the lower section eases to Class II pool-and-drop water before spilling into the lake. At optimal flows between 400-1500 CFS, this is technical water that demands boat control — no USGS gauge means reading the river at put-in is essential. The Rapid River sits within the Rangeley Lakes Region and operates under catch-and-release regulations for its fishery. Lakewood Camps provides guided trips and gear for those unfamiliar with the gradient.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
