Antietam Creek
About
Limestone springs feed Antietam Creek through 42 miles of Washington County farmland and forest, averaging 140 CFS with optimal paddling between 50–250 CFS. The upper 15 miles from Waynesboro, Pennsylvania to Funkstown run clearest, drawing on multiple spring sources through rolling agricultural country. An eight-mile section flows directly through Antietam National Battlefield, where stone bridges and historic sites line the banks. The lower 10 miles from Burnside Bridge to the Potomac confluence offer the most consistent paddling, with riffles punctuating otherwise gentle current. USGS gauge 01619500 tracks conditions, though the creek's spring-fed base flow keeps it paddleable most seasons. South Mountain Outfitters services the corridor. Maryland's Scenic River designation protects the watershed from major development, maintaining the rural character that defines most of the run.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
