Charles River
About
Eighty miles of flatwater wind through Middlesex and Suffolk counties from the headwaters to Boston Harbor, averaging 280 CFS with an optimal range of 100–800. The Massachusett people called it Quinobequin before European contact. The Upper Charles from South Natick to Newton runs through suburban marshes as Class I water. The Middle Charles from Newton to Watertown Dam offers the most popular flatwater paddling, while the Lower Charles Basin flows through the urban core past Harvard, MIT, and the Esplanade before reaching Boston Harbor. Charles River Canoe & Kayak and Community Boating provide rental services along the system. The Clean Charles 2005 Initiative launched in 1995 to restore water quality, and the Charles River Conservancy now coordinates ongoing protection efforts. USGS gauge 01104500 tracks conditions for the 80-mile system that remains entirely Class I flatwater paddling.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
