Sudbury River
About
From Cedar Swamp Pond through Middlesex County, the Sudbury winds 32 miles of flatwater that the Nipmuc called Musketaquid before European settlement. The river earned Wild & Scenic designation in 1999 as part of the SuAsCo Rivers system, with the core 12-mile stretch from Saxonville to Fairhaven Bay holding that protected status. At 220 CFS average flow, the Sudbury runs best between 80–500 CFS on gauge 01098530. The upper 12 miles from Cedar Swamp Pond to Saxonville thread narrow channels through meadow country, while the Wild & Scenic middle section opens toward Fairhaven Bay. Below the bay, the final 8 miles join the Concord River at Egg Rock. Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge protects wetland habitat along the corridor. OARS River Tours and South Bridge Boat House provide access and rentals for paddlers exploring this flat, meandering system.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
