Big Manistee Lake Branch
About
Forest tributary water runs clean and cold through 25 miles of the Manistee National Forest, averaging 140 CFS through gentle riffles and wider pools. The Big Manistee Lake Branch flows through Wexford County with optimal flows between 80–250 CFS on gauge 04126200. From Marilla to the M-37 Bridge, 10 miles of gentle riffles wind through national forest corridors. Below M-37, the final 15 miles widen toward the Manistee River confluence, offering stronger current and productive fishing water. The Odawa controlled this territory before European contact. Stream restoration work in 2005 improved habitat along several miles of the corridor within the national forest boundaries.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
